Mother and Pebble

Years ago, a good friend handed me this "rock within a rock". He had this found on the Seaside Beach. It was a perfect example of erosion. A pebble sitting on a larger rock. Over time water eroded the stone underneath the pebble creating a little perfectly size pocket for the pebble to sit in. This probably took thousands of years. I call it the "Mother and Pebble"

It was so precious I didn't want the pebble to all off and get lost. I decided to somehow weave the pebble to the "mother stone". Using copper wire, I made a frame to hold Mother and then made a tiny wire frame for Pebble. I connected Pebble to Mother using a wire umbilical cord. I now had Mother and Pebble connected with sufficient movement so that the pocket was visible.

My original idea was to weave the family into a larger pine needle basket. In order to do that I needed to create the base in which to weave the basket from. Making the base strong enough to support the basket, I typically form a ring made of wire and pine needles wrapped together. I can than start the coil weaving around that. For this piece I decided to suspend Mother and Pebble by a Tenerife weaving.

Unfortunately, I never finished it as a basket. However, I do have a very good friend, Shelley, who just moved here and is a master of copper wire weaving. Hmmmmmmmm.......I might have to twist her arm a little and see what she can add to this. Stay tuned.
