About Ellen Green

I am passionate about learning, creating, and sharing my experiences. I have done art and teaching as long as I can remember.

Since 2013, I have focused on creating monotype prints and acrylic paintings. Monotypes are the ‘painterly’ printmaking process and each print is unique. When I am working on monotypes, I have to think from the foreground to the background as I work. When I am painting, I think first about the background and then layer paint to the foreground. These two mediums challenge my thinking and perspective.

I fascinated by nature and my artwork is inspired by it. I am a life-long learner and I love studying color, horizon lines, and different perspectives, and subjects.  When creating landscapes, I look to where the land meets the sky, allured by the halo between them, until you see only the sky above.  I also enjoy painting floral and foliage.

I love using colors with many shades and angles of light.  I have been inspired by Georgia O’Keefe and Imogen Cunningham for their ability to capture the beauty of nature with a microscopic focus.

As a teen, I took many art classes that lead to my first job teaching art and science at the Palo Alto Junior Museum. I was 16 years old. I did my undergraduate work at The Evergreen State College, Olympia, WA with an emphasis in art.  I studied Visual Arts, Psychology, and Northwest/Southwest Native Culture. My focus at that time was on Ceramic Sculpture and I was an apprentice to ceramic sculptor, Ben Sams.

After attending Evergreen, I moved to Portland, OR and tried to make a living as an artist by showing my work and teaching art classes.  In 1978, I decided to go to graduate school at Western Oregon University, Monmouth, OR and become a public educator.  I earned a Master’s Degree in Education with teaching endorsements in special education, art education, reading and administration. I have always integrated art into my lessons and life.

After my 34-year public education career, I returned to doing art, teaching art classes and being a leader of art activities in my community.
